Betty Cory

August 25, 1929 - February 24, 2019

Betty Lou (Elliott) Cory was born on August 25, 1929 in Jefferson, IA to Floyd F. Elliott and Flora E. (Buswell) Elliott. She was raised in Jefferson and graduated from Jefferson High School in May, 1947. Betty worked for Dr. Jean Jongewaard, Shuey’s Drug Store, and Shoppe’s Café in Jefferson after graduation. Betty married Darrel Cory on May 6, 1948 at the Central Christian Church in Jefferson. They were blessed with three sons (Marty, Barry and Randy). They moved to Boone, IA in 1952 when Darrel started working for Iowa Electric Light and Power Company. Their sons attended and graduated from Boone Schools and the University of Northern Iowa. Betty worked for the Boone School District for over 19 years as the secretary at Franklin Grade School. She was awarded “Boone County Working Woman of the Year” in 1990. Betty was baptized at Central Christian Church in Jefferson. She and Darrel were members of Boone Central Christian Church over 60 years and served there in many capacities. Darrel and Betty were married over 61 years before his death in 2010. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Darrel, daughter in law, Marsha Lilly Cory, her parents, brothers: Donald, Eugene, Harold, Robert, John and wife, Nedra, Eldon “Jerry” and wife, Shirley, and a brother who died in infancy. Also, sister Marguerite Cavallier and husband Robert and sister in law, Margaret Elliott. Betty is survived by her sons including Marty of West Branch, IA, Barry of Clear Lake, IA and Randy (Cathy) of West Des Moines, IA. Also, by her beloved grandchildren, Rebecca Cory (Matt Kelly) of St, Louis, MO and Alex Cory of Des Moines, IA. In addition, she is survived by her sister Rita Clark and husband Melvin of Des Moines, IA, brother Richard of Boerne, TX and many dear nieces and nephews and their families. Betty and Darrel and their family enjoyed time spent in their fishing boat and attending many major league baseball games over the years. Betty will be remembered for her love of her family and her welcoming home. She was a great cook and enjoyed celebrating birthdays and holidays. Her chocolate chip cookies were legendary! She particularly loved the season of Christmas and took great joy in giving to others. She was an avid Kansas City Royals, Hawkeyes, Cyclones and Panthers fan. She enjoyed participating in the Friendship Circle at Church and getting together with retired school employees. Betty died at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, IA on February 24, 2019 at the age of 89 years. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home, 609 7th Street, Boone, IA. The family will greet friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone, IA.
