Betty Lou Myers

June 14, 1923 - August 11, 2013

Betty Lou Myers, 90, of Boone, Iowa passed away at Westhaven Community in Boone on Sunday, August 11, 2013 where the couple has lived since June of 2003. She was born on June 14, 1923, in Amy, Kansas the daughter of John Henry and Alice (Walker) Sharp. On September 8, 1964, she married Woodrow Myers at the First United Methodist Church in Boone. Betty Lou was an elementary school teacher, having taught 5 years in Kansas before moving to Boone, where she taught for 9 years at Garfield School and later served as Junior High student counselor for 15 years. She received her teaching degree from Emporia State Teacher’s College in Kansas and a Master of Arts in Education from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. In addition to education, she was a homemaker and mother. Betty Lou enjoyed beadwork, sewing, playing the organ, gardening and reading. Betty Lou had a life long appreciation of plants and animals, both as an artist and naturalist. Her many paintings and observations of Iowa wildflowers were recently published in a book, “My Friends the Flowers”. Her parents and 2 brothers, Ted and Bill Sharp, preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband Woodrow of Boone; 2 daughters Sarah Tiller Kerridge of Washougal, Washington and Claudia Myers Bell of Farmington, Maine; 4 sons Jack Tiller of Flower Mound, Texas, Fred Tiller of Portland, Oregon, Craig Myers of Earlham, Iowa, and Carl Myers of Fresno, California; 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; a sister Margarite Sharp Stremel of Kansas City, Missouri; nieces, nephews and cousins. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday evening, August 20th at 6:30 p.m. in the Westhaven Community Independent Living dining room at 112 West 4th Street in Boone, Iowa. A private interment will be held for the family at the Bass Point Cemetery in Boone, Iowa. In memory of Betty Lou, memorials may be directed to Camp Hantesa, 1448 Oriole Road, Boone, Iowa 50036.
