Fred W. Miller January 22, 1924 – March 8, 2022 Fred W. Miller, 98, of Boone, Iowa, passed away at his home in Boone on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. He was born on January 22, 1924 in Boone, Iowa the son of Bert and Ruby (Lang) Miller. After graduating from Boone High School in 1942, Fred enlisted and proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a Medic/Pharmacist mate during WWII until 1945. He often told stories of battles his ship endured but also felt fortunate to “see the world” at 18 years old. After returning home, he married his sweetheart, Arla Jean Carlson on June 13, 1947. Fred attended Drake University, where he received a degree in Pharmacy in 1953. He then began working with his father Bert and brother Frank at Miller’s Rexall Drug Store located at 8th and Story Street in Boone. In 1970 he and his brother moved to a new Miller’s Drive-Up Pharmacy on Marshall Street, where he worked until his retirement. Fred continued working part-time for Pharmacies in Dayton, Jewell, Stratford, and finally Medical Associates in Boone, completing 61 years as a Registered Pharmacist. He enjoyed playing golf at the Boone Golf and Country Club in his younger years. He boasted about having a hole in one at the age of 12, then later having another. In his later years, he stayed active and enjoyed working in his yard, chatting with neighbors over the fence, and keeping in touch with his friends at the Pharmacy. Fred also looked forward to visiting family and spending time with them. The family would like to give a special thank you to the John Wiebold family, John and Marcia Hurst, and Fred’s neighbors for helping and looking out for him over the years. Fred was preceded in death by his wife Jean Miller; daughter Kathy Miller; parents Bert and Ruby Miller, and brother Frank Miller. He is survived by his daughters: Cheri (Miller) Morgan and Dave Morgan of Ogden, IA; Diane (Miller) Maher of Ankeny, IA, and Kitty (Miller) Scartozzi of Houston, TX; son-in-law Danny Batt of Sun Lakes, AZ; grandchildren: Holly Batt (Scott Larimer), Erica (Batt) Tulk, John Tulk, Derek Batt, Alicia Wills, and Christian Maher; 5 great-grandchildren: Hayden, Hunter, Case, Clark, and Kinlee, as well as several other relatives and many friends. A graveside service with Military Honors will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family to use at their discretion.
