Irene Pohl, 97, of the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone passed away at the Boone County Hospital in Boone on Friday, August 27, 2010. Irene Carolyn Pohl, daughter of James and Anna (Friedrecksen) Curvin was born January 23, 1913 in a farm home north of Bouton, Iowa. They moved north of Ogden, then to a farm east of Boone in 1919. She attended the Jordan Consolidated School, riding those early years in horse drawn busses and graduated valedictorian in 1930. After graduation she clerked at the Boone Red Arrow Grocery store. On March 6, 1936, she married Walter Sherman Pohl at her parents’ home, and the couple farmed nearby, becoming the parents of three children: John, Linda and Richard “Dick”. She was very active in the Prairie Center Methodist Church, which united, with Boone United Methodist Church in 1968. She was also active in Jordan PTA and Farm Bureau Women. Throughout her life, Irene treasured birds, flowers, and the great outdoors. Together they enjoyed traveling, sightseeing, and Minnesota fishing trips with family and friends. After Sherman’s death, August 25, 1988, she moved to Boone, where she served as a guide for many years at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace and became active in AARP, as well as various community and Church activities. She joined the Mitten Knitters and created hundreds of hats for the needy. She had a strong faith, a deep love for her family, and desire to help others. She was preceded in death by her husband Sherman; parents; three brothers William (Dorothy), Vernon (Evelyn), and Howard; and two grandchildren Eric John Pohl and Sally Ann Pohl. Surviving are her children John Pohl and wife Sharon of Boone; Linda Anderson and husband Richard of Jackson, Minnesota, and Dick Pohl and wife Mary of Bozeman, Montana; grandchildren Keith and Sharon Pohl both of Boone, Brenda Fisher and husband Curtis of Roland, Iowa, Sheila Tesch and husband Jason of Milford, Iowa, Aleta Myers and husband Kevin of Austin, Minnesota, Shawn Kuhlman and wife Alissa of Wheeling, Illinois, Jennifer Koozer and husband Matthew of Portland Oregon, and Kelly Pohl of Bozeman, Montana; step-grandchildren Steve Anderson and wife Sharon of Yukon, Oklahoma, and Tami Madson and husband Steve of Novato, California; great-grandchildren Nathan and Brandon Pohl of Boone; Lindsey, Brooke and Ryan Fisher all of Roland, Iowa, Halee and Jacob Morrow both of Milford, Iowa, Sawyer, Trey and Lucas Myers all of Austin, Minnesota, Sierra Kuhlman of Wheeling, Illinois, Boone and Cleo Koozer of Portland, Oregon, and Adelaide Pohl of Bozeman, Montana; step-great-grandchildren Kyra, Emily, and MaGregor Anderson all of Yukon, Oklahoma, and Courtney and Carissa Madson both of Novato, California. Services will be held on Tuesday morning, August 31st at 10:00 a.m. at the Eastern Star Masonic Home Chapel with Rev. Philip Webb officiating. Visitation will be at the Eastern Star Masonic Home Chapel from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone. Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial may direct their gift to the First United Methodist Church or the Eastern Star Masonic Home both in Boone.
