Joanne Nystrom Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Joanne Nystrom, 79, of 1828 Aldrich Avenue in Boone passed away at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa on Monday morning, July 8, 2013. She was born on February 28, 1934 in Boone, Iowa the daughter of Elmer and Nellie (Keeling) Barnes. On November 6, 1955, she married John “Jack” Nystrom at the First Baptist Church in Boone, Iowa. Joanne was a 1951 graduate of Boone High School. She was formerly employed at Fareway where she served as a personal assistant to Fred Vitt and Paul Beckwith. Joanne was co-owner of Nystrom Motors for a number of years and from June of 1982 until her retirement in January of 2008, she was an administrative specialist in the Botany Department at Iowa State University in Ames. Joanne enjoyed playing bridge and loved her dogs. She was a member of the Open Bible Church and a former member of the ABWA and Republican Women. Her parents; 2 brothers Charles Barnes and James Barnes, and former husband, Jack Nystrom, preceded her in death. Survivors include 1 son, Eric Nystrom and wife Carol of Eagan, Minnesota; 2 daughters, Ellen Nystrom of Boone, Iowa and Monica McHugh and husband Jamie of Zwingle, Iowa; 4 grandchildren, Erinn Nystrom of Farmington, Minnesota, Andrew Nystrom of Eagan, Minnesota, John McHugh and Juli McHugh both of Zwingle, Iowa; a great-grandson Kolton Lien of Farmington, Minnesota; a sister Wilma Pollard of Boone, Iowa; and a brother Kenneth Barnes and wife Helen also of Boone, Iowa. Services will be held on Friday morning, July 12th at 10:00 a.m. in the Open Bible Church in Boone with Pastor Phil Waldo officiating. Interment will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone. Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family present during that time to greet friends. Visitations will continue at the Church on Friday morning from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials gifts may be directed to the Open Bible Church Building Fund or the Israel Family Hospice House.
