June 3, 1929 - March 26, 2018

John M. Veale June 3, 1928 ~ March 26, 2018 John M. Veale, age 89, passed away on Monday, March 26th at Israel Family Hospice House, in Ames, Iowa, surrounded by loved ones. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 4th at 10:30am with Rev. Doug Cue officiating. Visitation will be at the Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home, 609 7th Street, on Tuesday April 3rd from 5-7pm. John was born on June 3rd, 1928 to Raymond and Christine (Risher) Veale. He graduated from Boone High School in 1946. After graduation, John enlisted in the US Marine Corps and received an honorable discharge in 1948. John spent his working years employed by the United States Postal Service as a city carrier, then rural letter carrier for Boone. On September 17, 1950, John was united in marriage to Barbara Brainard. They had 2 sons, Timothy Alan and Thomas John, as well as a beautiful daughter, Catherine Christine (Reed). John was a member of First United Methodist Church in Boone. He was a Master Mason and belonged to Mt Olive Lodge in Boone where he was a past Master and a 50 year member. When John retired from the USPS, he became a volunteer at Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad. It was there where he shared his love of trains with many and found joy in running the steam locomotive. In 2015, John received the honor of participating in the Boone County Freedom Flight to Washington DC with fellow service men and women. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Barbara, of Boone, IA, children: Tom (Debbie) of Palos Verdes Estates, CA and Catherine (Chris) Reed of San Francisco, CA, daughter in-law, Kellie of Ames, IA, brother Joe (Marge) of Murietta, CA, and sister, Janet Buck of Boone, IA, grandchildren: Timothy Veale Jr. of Wisconsin, Jennifer Veale (Nathan Booth) of Ames, IA, Julie (Jeremy) Schlosser of Ames, IA, Jodie Veale of Ames, IA, Jamie (Nathan) Wilson of Colo, IA, Grace Veale of Chicago, IL, John Veale II, of Washington DC, Diana Reed of San Francisco, CA, and Isobel Reed of Chico, CA, as well as many great-grandchildren, family, and friends. John was preceded in death by his loving parents, Raymond and Christine Veale, and his eldest son, Timothy Alan Veale. The family kindly requests that memorials be directed towards the First United Methodist Church in Boone, IA or the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad.
