June Nelson

June 28, 1928 - February 22, 2014

June Lee Olney Nelson, 85, of Ogden, passed away on Saturday evening, February 22, 2014. She was born on June 28, 1928 in Cuba, Missouri the daughter of Levi Almond and Clella Belle (Woody) Olney. In 1941, her family moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa where her father worked for the CN&W Railroad which eventually led them to Boone, Iowa in 1943. June graduated from Boone High School in 1947. June’s passion was hair dressing. She attended Iowa Beauty School in Des Moines, Iowa and went on to work at the Bon Ton Beauty Salon in Boone. On June 26, 1949, June married Dean Nelson of Ogden. They made their home in Ogden where they raised their two daughters. June took an active role in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives and their friends. She was a Blue Bird and Camp Fire leader where she planned day camps and weekends trips to Camp Hantesa. She was “Grandma June” to many and beloved as such. Besides having a heart of gold, she was a skilled story teller, and possessed a lively, fiery spirit. Her interest in family led her into researching her extended family through genealogy. June’s artistic bent was displayed in her admired yard work. She loved her bicycle and could be seen riding around town, many times with a child or two on the back! She is survived by her husband, Dean of Ogden, Iowa; 2 daughters, Julie Nelson of Toluca Lake, California and Nora Nelson and her husband Marvin Hitchings of Ames, Iowa; 1 brother H.W. Olney of Boone; 4 grandchildren Nicole Gade and husband John of Ankeny, Iowa, Kelly Nelson of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Megan Haddox and husband Donny of Thousand Oaks, California, Colter Earl and wife Christine of Henderson, Nevada; 7 great-grandchildren Griffin and Evee Gade, Kylie June Kaiser, Nathanael, Liljana and Tyler Earl, and Alexa Haddox. Her parents and half brother Herbert Bench preceded her in death. A private family graveside service with interment to follow will be in the Swede Valley Cemetery south of Ogden with Pastor Tom Prochnow officiating. Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Thursday evening, February 27th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family present during that time to greet friends.
