Kenneth L. "Carp" Carpenter

Kenneth L. “Carp” Carpenter, age 76, of 1212 Marshall Street in Boone passed away on Tuesday morning, February 8, 2011, at the Boone County Hospital. Ken was born July 28, 1934, in Boone, Iowa the son of Laddie K. and Fern V. (Rose) Carpenter. He grew up in Moingona, IA and graduated from Boone High School in 1952. Following high school he enlisted in the Iowa National Guard and served in the Headquarters Battery 185th Field Artillery Battalion. On January 25, 1958, he was united in marriage with Helen Jeanne Yegge. He enjoyed serving the people of Boone through various businesses including Vogler-Nieman Chevrolet, Modern Appliance, Iowa Department of Transportation, Nystrom Motors, CN&N Sports, Westrum Motors of Stratford, Farm Bureau Insurance, and Johnson & Sons Iowa Realty and Insurance. Ken was a member of many Boone area service organizations including the Boone Jaycees, Boone Moose Lodge, Boone Elks Lodge, Boone VFW, Boone Volunteer Fire Department, the Mid-Iowa Snobirds Snowmobile Association, and the Boone Little League. As part of his contributions to the Jaycees he served as local chapter president, state vice-president and was honored with a lifetime membership. In his later years, he enjoyed daily coffee with friends, helping restore antique automobiles, and following the activities of his devoted grandchildren. His parents and his sister Wilma (Carpenter) Dixon preceded Ken in death. He is survived by Helen, his loving wife of 53 years, and their children; Patrick (Elizabeth) Carpenter of Boone, Jeanne (Craig) Wiebke of Ames, Raymond (Lori) Carpenter of Waukee, and Wayne (Laura Flanagan) Carpenter of Wilmette, Illinois. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; Amanda Carpenter, Nicole (Carpenter) Nicholson, Laura Carpenter, Jared Carpenter, Andrew Wiebke, Jacob Wiebke, Adam Carpenter, and Anne Carpenter, and one great grandchild Hadley Dawn Nicholson. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday morning, February 12th at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone with Father Steve Brodersen officiating. Following interment at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone, a fellowship luncheon and gathering will be held at the Sacred Heart parish center. Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel on Friday, February 11th between 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family present between 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to greet friends. Memorials may be directed to the family to be donated at their discretion.
