Marvin "Jim" McVicker

July 17, 1928 - June 27, 2015

Marvin “Jim” McVicker, 86, of 121 Clinton Street in Boone, passed away at the Boone County Hospital in Boone on Monday afternoon, June 22, 2015. He was born on July 17, 1928 in Boone, Iowa the son of William and Addie (Dutton) McVicker. On November 12, 1950, he married Lorraine Long at the Methodist Church in Stanhope, Iowa. He graduated from Boone High School in 1946. Jim was a veteran of World War II serving with the Army with overseas duty in Japan. He was involved with construction work throughout his life working for Lippert Brothers in Boone, James Thompson & Sons in Ames and Story Construction of Ames when he retired. Jim enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping and spending time with his family. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion, V.F.W. and the Bowling Hall of Fame. His parents; 4 sisters, Vivian Wirtz, Marge Pepper, Dorothy McMahon and JoAnne Leininger; 3 brothers Daryl McVicker, Gary McVicker and William McVicker preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife Lorraine of 64 years; 2 sons Jim McVicker and wife Jean of Lake Havasu City, Arizona and Jerry McVicker and wife Cindy of Lincoln, Nebraska; 2 daughters Janice Swedlund and husband Mark of Ankeny, Iowa and Julie Herrstrom and husband Tim of Luther, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, Matthew McVicker and wife Stacy, Danielle Murphy and husband Joel, Haley Swedlund and husband Malte Lierl, Mallory Riggs and husband Ryan, Nic McVicker and wife Lisa, Abby McVicker, Bailey Erskine and husband Walker, Troy Kruse and wife Tammy, Michelle Latterell and husband Troy; 14 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters-in law Joyce McVicker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Cathy McVicker of Califon, New Jersey. Jim’s wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday afternoon, June 27th at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Boone with Rev. Sarah Karber officiating. Interment with military honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone. Visitations will be held on Saturday prior to the service from Noon until 1:00 p.m. with the family present during that time to greet friends. Memorial contributions in Jim’s memory may be directed to the First United Methodist Church.
