Norma Jean (Moravetz) Haglund, 85, of Ogden, Iowa passed away Saturday evening, March 27, 2010 at the Ogden Manor surrounded by her family. She was born February 21, 1925 in Boone, Iowa the daughter of Roy and Dorthea Moravetz. Norma Jean attended Ogden Community Schools and graduated from Ogden High School in 1943. On August 20, 1944, she married Ronald Haglund at the Battin Chapel Church in Ogden, Iowa. The couple made their home on the Haglund family farm in Amaqua Township. They opened their home to many children, including Irene and Bill Smart, Kathy (Jones) Churchill and Norma Jean’s sisters, Annette and Joann who had recently lost their father. Norma Jean worked at Bourns in Ames and as a nurse’s aide at the Boone County Hospital and the Evangelical Free Church Home. She graduated from nursing school and worked as an LPN at the Rowley Masonic Home in Perry, and retired from the Ogden Manor in 1995. In 1956 their first son, Kevin was born, followed by Kent in 1959, Kriss in 1960, Karen in 1962, and Karl in 1965. The family moved to their present home farm in 1965, where they farmed and raised dairy cows and horses. Norma Jean served as the co-chair of the Farm Bureau Women’s committee and served on the Battin Chapel Heritage board. She also served as a 4-H leader. Norma Jean was the pianist for the Ogden Baptist Church for 33 years. She served as a school volunteer for RSVP, Respite Care and the Ogden Manor. Some of her favorite activities included listening to her grandchildren’s music, crocheting, baking for family and friends, and competing at the Open Show at the Boone County Fair. Her husband in 2002; two sons, Kevin in 1987 and Kent in 1992; her brother Merlin (Buddy) in 2008; and Bill Smart preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Brenda Haglund, her son Justin, and his daughter Brayleigh of Boone; two sons Kriss and his wife Crystal of Boone, and their children, Andrea, Cory, Audra, Lauren and Leah; and Karl and his wife Susan of Ogden and their children, Harrison, Henry, Leslie, Nick and Melissa, and her sons Dominique and Kenyon; two daughters Karen and her husband Tom Crider and their son Kolby of Seminole, Fla., and Irene Fenton of Cherokee Village, Arkansas., and her sons David Eckerson and his wife Jennifer and family of Muskogee, Oklahoma and Rick Eckerson and his wife Tracy and family of Cypress, Texas; two sisters, Annette and her husband Kenny Peterson of Boxholm; Joann Guenaga of Silver City, New Mexico; two sister-in-law’s Dorothy and her husband Dean Hunter of Boone; Helen Moravetz of San Diego, California. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday morning, April 6th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Ogden Baptist Church in Ogden, Iowa with Revs. Ernest Ruben, Frank Huebner and Mike Salati officiating. Interment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden, Iowa. Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Monday evening, April 5th from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with the family present during that time to greet friends. Visitations will continue on Tuesday morning at the Church from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service. Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial may direct their gift to the family.
