Richard Clay Hurst December 26, 1935 – February 4, 2017 Richard Clay Hurst, age 81, went to his eternal home with Jesus on February 4, 2017 at Westhaven Community in Boone, Iowa. Richard was born December 26, 1935, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Clay and Evelyn (Helland) Hurst. He was raised in Luther, Iowa and graduated from Luther High School in 1954. He worked with his father who built grain elevators throughout Iowa. He attended Augustana Lutheran College and Drake University before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1957. He was stationed at McClellan AFB where he served as a Radio-radar Electronic Technician on RC121 aircraft for 4 years. After his discharge from the Air Force, he worked at Douglas Aircraft Missile Test Facility, Sacramento, CA, for 8 years as an Electronic Technician/Quality Control Inspector on the 4th stage of the Apollo missile. When the test facility closed in 1969, he returned to Iowa and completed his BA degree (Insurance) from Drake University in 1973. He moved to Boise ID where he worked as an Agent for Allstate Insurance Company and as an Insurance Underwriter for a local insurance agency. During his career in insurance, he studied through The American College and obtained professional designations as a Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant. He also obtained a professional certification as a Certified Insurance Examiner. He was a member of The Society of Financial Examiners. Richard loved the great outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He liked sports and played basketball, baseball, tennis and golf. He enjoyed watching TV westerns and sports. But what he really loved was spending time and visiting with family and friends. He was a ”people person” and never knew a stranger. He was close to his Lord God and attended church regularly, whether at home or on vacation. He taught Sunday School, served on church boards and committees, and was a Boy Scout leader. He was a life-time member of the American Legion, and a past member of Luther Lions Club and the Boone Rotary.
